Due to our limited number of campers, Camp Shi’ini is able to offer a great variety of activities with more individual supervision. Some include: Indian lore, cookouts, nature hikes, and unique games and sports (such as Foxtail, Capture the Flag, and Elephant Soccer). Both a senior and junior counselor are assigned to each group. At Camp Shi’ini, senior counselors are hired on the basis of: ideals, college records, maturity, experience, occupation, driving records, and the ability to understand children. Junior counselors are hired on the basis of: leadership, character, attentiveness, dependability, and overall experience working with kids. Both sets of counselors are well-trained and exceptionally responsible. They take great pride in their jobs and love working with the campers.

The shaded areas and turf fields of the lower Arroyo Seco have been the primary location of our camp for many years. It is one of the few remaining primitive areas in the vicinity. Arroyo Park (located on Stoney Drive in South Pasadena) affords the perfect atmosphere for most of our camp activities.

Senior counselors pick up campers from their homes in new, seat-belt equipped vans between 8:30-9:20 AM. Campers are returned home between 3:50-4:40 PM. Since safety is our top-concern, each van driver must go through an extensive training course and earn a California Commercial Class B Drivers License from the California DMV. Child booster seats are permitted for campers under age six.

Campers should bring their own lunches (packed in disposable paper bags). Camp Shi’ini provides chilled milk and ice water during lunchtime. Campers should also bring a backpack containing a swimsuit and towel to be used during swimming.
